Redesigning filtering -streamlining user experience and establishing design consistency

I audited filtering systems across services, uncovering inconsistencies that caused user frustration. Insights guided the creation of design principles to establish a unified and intuitive filtering experience. I developed a scalable filtering solution, collaborating with designers to ensure consistency and clarity. High-fidelity designs addressed user pain points, and the rollout began with job ads, gradually expanding to improve the platform-wide experience. This work streamlined user interactions and established cohesive design standards
Background
During the analysis of the user experience, we identified inconsistencies in how filters behaved and were perceived across our services. This became particularly evident when filters were being added to job listings. Users expressed frustration with the varying filter logic and design, leading to unnecessary complexity and reduced efficiency in their searches.

To address this issue, we set out to develop a unified filtering solution that could be consistently applied across all areas of our services where filters are used. By creating a cohesive and intuitive filtering experience, our goal was to simplify the user journey, enhance accessibility, and improve the overall user experience.
My contribution in this initiative
  • Research and define
The research phase started with thoroughly auditing the existing filtering systems across various parts of our services. I collaborated with cross-functional teams to map current filter implementations, highlighting design, functionality, and user interaction inconsistencies.
A significant insight from this phase was the inconsistency in filter patterns, which contributed to user frustration and inefficiency. This lack of uniformity created a fragmented experience, making it harder for users to navigate and apply filters seamlessly.
The findings from this research directly informed the development of design principles and guidelines aimed at creating a unified, intuitive filtering experience across all touchpoints. This foundation ensured the design phase addressed user pain points while promoting a more cohesive and efficient user journey.

  • Designing

In designing the new filtering solution, I collaborated closely with designers responsible for filter functionality across various services to ensure alignment and consistency. A key focus of the initiative was scalability – creating adaptable components that could seamlessly integrate into different parts of the platform while maintaining a cohesive user experience.

I also partnered with the content team to refine filter labels and instructions, enhancing clarity and reducing cognitive load for users. This helped ensure the filtering system was approachable, intuitive, and easy to navigate.

By the end of the design phase, we documented and delivered a high-fidelity design for the updated filter patterns, facilitating a smooth handoff to developers. We began the rollout by implementing the new filters in job ads, gradually expanding the updated design across all services to ensure consistency and improve the overall user experience.
